About the Program

University of Indonesia Internationalization by Means of Research Center Development and Integrated Development of Tropical and Infectious Disease


Infectious diseases still become the cause of mortality, morbidity, and also social economic disturbance for millions of people in the world although a lot of improvements in developing of well sanitation and hygiene, effective antibiotics, and safe vaccine have been reached. According to Global Burden Disease Data 2004 (WHO), infectious diseases yet become the cause of death of about 16-17% of the world inhabitants. Various infectious disease in Indonesia such as upper respiratory tract infection, diarrhea, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis are still in the big ten as the most common diseases that can cause death all over the world, while malaria disease still threaten almost half of the people in the world.

According to Riset Kesehatan Dasar (Riskesdas) 2007, infectious diseases responsible for the death of 28.1% Indonesian people, with tuberculosis in the second place as the cause of death among all age group. Beside tuberculosis, there are also various infectious diseases that play role in mortality incidence in Indonesia such as hepatic infection, pneumonia, diarrhea, typhoid, malaria, meningitis/ encephalitis, dengue hemorrhage fever, tetanus, and septicemia. Thus, it is important to learn and understand comprehensively about tropical and infectious diseases in order to solve these problems.

In its Strategic Plan (Renstra) of 2008-2013, University of Indonesia has already decided their objectives. The objectives are to improve and strengthen the international reputation of University of Indonesia and to produce superior intellectual products that can increase the human being prosperity. Thus, University of Indonesia establishes a Research and Integrated Development Center of Tropical and Infectious Diseases as one of its superior program.


Research and Integrated Development Center of Tropical and Infectious Diseases of University of Indonesia will be consist of these activities:

1. Development of Tropical and Infectious Disease  Study Group which involve various fields of expertise including health, science, technology, and social, which become the main network nationally and internationally.

Global cooperation with various leading international institution in the field of tropical and infectious diseases is needed in order to share knowledge, skill, and facility. Indonesia as a “source” of those diseases had to play an important role and become the main key of that global cooperation. UI have had a well accredited national and international reputation in tropical and infectious diseases sector, and a long history in building cooperation with leading institution all over the world.

The goals of this activity:

  1. Increasing the number of UI and international cooperation in the field of tropical and infectious disease.
  2. Increasing the number of research publication to build international cooperation.
  3. UI as a referral center in global network nationally and internationally.
  4. Producing a knowledge management system of tropical and infectious diseases that expected to be the trusted and latest data source for any people who needed and to support the advocation effort and public policy improvement in that field.

The steps of this activity consist of:

  1. Maping of potential resources.
  2. Designing Bussines plan.
  3. Socialization and network building nationally and internationally in the field of tropical and infectious disease.
  4. Establishing disease based-community lab.
  5. Building management information system.
  6. Public dissemination of Information by periodic symposium or publication to general societies.
  7. Exchange researcher and trainer.

2. Developing of educational program in the field of Tropical and Infectious Disease based on research in international level by utilizing the latest teaching method

Development of educational system in the form of credit-earning program is expected to gain a larger number of college student and foreign researchers to learn an to investigate in the field of infectious disease in University of Indonesia. That improvement will strengthen the university reputation in international level. These are relevant to vision and mission of university of Indonesia.

The goals of this activity are:

  1. Actualization of education program in tropical and infectious disease based on research in international level in various stage
  2. Increasing the number of college students and foreign researchers who study in UI.

Those activities will be execute through the three following steps:

  1. Module development in the form of credit earning program including post-graduate certificate, post-graduate diploma and bachelor level elective module based on research and utilizing the latest technologies such as computer mediated learning, distance learning, etc which are done by study groups and arranged by the disease.
  2. Program socialization nationally and internationally, including scholarship founder through printed and electronic media, presentation to various potential organizations and open house.
  3. Educational program realization supported by the latest technology.
  4. Exchange student.
